SPANISH MAIL TRAVELS ON ITALIAN ELECTRIC SCOOTERS
Correos chooses Oxygen electric CargoScooter
to renew its fleet and give clean air to Spanish cities
SANTANDER 2009.
Oxygen, the European leader in the development, production, sale and distribution of light electrical vehicles, has announced a breakthrough initiative that will provide the Spanish national postal service with new eco-friendly scooters powered by 100% pure electric energy. Correos has taken a major step forward, by choosing the leading-edge technology of Oxygen CargoScooters with Lithium-Ion batteries, to deliver its mail and to offer Spanish citizens an innovative means of bringing about national environmental policies. The new eco-friendly Correos fleet will debut in Spain in February 2009.
The choice of Correos is part of the Cantabrian governmental project Bio Bike, designed to promote sustainable mobility. During the summer of 2008, the Cantabrian Government played a major role in the introduction of electric vehicles into Spain. It was the first region to introduce Oxygen CargoScooters, which are now being used by delivery companies, council employees and other private and public officers – all of whom count on the scooters’ efficiency and reliability every day.
Correos’ decision to purchase 20 electric CargoScooters underlines the strong focus of its management team on Corporate Social Responsibility and its ability to combine economics, ecology and social values. Oxygen technology guarantees savings of up to 90 per cent of energy costs in comparison to traditionally-powered scooters. Specifically designed for the delivery market, the Oxygen CargoScooters have an autonomy of up to 120 km with one recharge and can carry up to 90 kilos, thus optimising efficiency and customer care.
The decision of Correos to enlarge its fleet by purchasing silent electric scooters with zero emissions, is set to improve the life of Spanish citizens. This has already happened in many other European countries where CargoScooters are already in use - not only in Switzerland, where the Swiss Post bought 250 Oxygen CargoScooters last September, but also in Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the U.K., Italy, France and Austria where several companies, both public and private, use Oxygen electric scooters every day for their deliveries.
“In a typical working day, Spanish postmen travel the equivalent of nine times round the world,” said the President of Correos, Sixto Heredia. That’s why the best way to reduce emissions, is to provide them with scooters that are 100% ecologically friendly.
Francisco Martin, the Spanish councillor for the environment of the Government of Cantabria, said: “In modern cities, we only have two choices: a collective mode of transport, or, individually, the electric scooter – the only vehicle that is both a form of urban transportation and does not create noise or emissions. If postmen and postwomen can easily use it for their job, it is quite clear that this vehicle is ideal for all of us.”
“Correos’ decision to choose us makes us proud and willing to strengthen our policy of investment in research and in innovative technologies. We are well ahead of the times, as always”- says Antonio Croppo, Oxygen’s CEO. “Our focus on advanced technology, together with our success in being chosen by Correos and by the Cantabrian region confirm our leadership in electric light vehicles for the delivery market”.
Oxygen’s Spanish partner in the operation is Going Green, the national leader for the distribution of electric vehicles, which has a broad commercial and after-sales network across the entire Iberian peninsula.
“We are very glad to partner with the Government of Cantabria and Correos in this successful initiative. Clients are very happy with the reliability of the CargoScooter, the range is clearly sufficient for their purposes and the impact in terms of corporate image is definitely positive. Correos has given such a good example that, I am confident that many others will follow”.
