With less than 100 days to go until the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, the tone of the United States President, Barack Obama’s, ultimatum “it’s now or never” sounds alarming.
That is why, within the global debate of protecting the planet, concrete measures are of enormous importance.
This is the case for Swiss Post, the Swiss national postal service, which serves 7 million citizens. Swiss Post long ago chose to gamble on CO2-emission reductions and has now decided to raise the bet.
Now the news is official: Swiss Post has decided to up its game, by doubling the fleet of 250 two-wheel electric scooters, thereby reaching a grand total of 500 ecological CargoScooters, which after only 12 months of usage of its first electric fleet, will now allow Swiss Post to call its electric scooter fleet the largest one in the world.
These 250 scooters, driven by 100% pure energy, were delivered to Swiss Post last September by Oxygen, Europe’s leading company for the development and production of electric vehicles. With its first electric fleet – the biggest in Europe – in 2008 Swiss Post was already a global exemplary case study for others involved in environmental protection.
So much that many other national post organization, such as Correos, have now their own CargoScooter fleet.
The Swiss managers were not only convinced by the great environmental benefits of electric vehicles for the environment, but also by their exceptional technological capabilities. Oxygen’s electric CargoScooter is a zero-emission vehicle, supplied with lithium-ion batteries and designed for professional use with a range up to 120 km. Equipped with the same technological and safety devices of a luxury car, the electric scooter is easy-to-use and as reliable as any durable house-hold electrical appliance. Recharging is done by connecting the CargoScooter to an electrical socket, which guarantees unequaled cost-saving.
According to reliable sources, a traditional 50cc scooter, which is the most common vehicle for European postal services, with an average mileage of around 30 km per day, emits approximately 2.5 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere over a period of 12 months. Multiplied by 500 units, Swiss Post’s electric fleet will save the planet from 1,250 tons of CO2 per year.
“Swiss standards for the quality and use of vehicles are extremely strict,” explains Antonio Croppo, Oxygen’s CEO. “This new opportunity, which we gladly seize, allows us to be certain beyond doubt that our CargoScooter fully meets the operational and technical demands of the Swiss Post and European delivery industry, as well as their need to radically shift towards sustainable mobility, by providing today what others promise to supply tomorrow.”
“We are delighted with the technology developed by Oxygen. It is the ideal tool to help us improve our services to the community in the most varied and difficult operational and weather conditions,” explains Martin Lochbrunner, CEO of Mobility Solutions, Swiss Post’s fleet management company. “The attention that Oxygen has paid to even our smallest needs as well as our common vision of social responsibility has today enabled the realization of this major project leading us to a healthier and more respectful future for the environment.”
An example for all of us. To be continued…
